Have You Been Scammed?
Over the last two days, three different people have told me some version of the same story.
They hired someone to build their website.
They paid upfront.
They got little to nothing in return.
Maybe a half-finished design. Maybe a few broken pages. Maybe just silence.
And then—gone.
Has this ever happened to you?
This is the part of the web design industry no one really talks about. The barrier to entry is low. Anyone can call themselves a “web designer” or “web developer.” There’s no license, no regulation, no real filter. And because of that, there are a lot of people out there offering services they’re not fully equipped—or committed—to deliver.
It Also Made Me Think About Something I Get Asked All the Time
“Are you nervous about AI?”
“Are you worried about how many web designers there are now?”
And the honest answer is… no. Not really.
Not because those things don’t exist—they absolutely do. But because I’m seeing, in real time, why what I do actually matters.
There’s a difference between:
- Building something quickly
- And building something that works
There’s a difference between:
- Offering a service
- And being responsible for someone’s business
A website isn’t just a design project. For most of my clients, it’s their first impression, their credibility, their lead generator, their online presence. It’s not something you can afford to get wrong.
And yet, people are.
The Problem Isn’t Just Skill — It’s Accountability
Some of the stories I’ve heard aren’t even about bad design.
They’re about:
- Poor communication
- Missed timelines
- Lack of follow-through
- No support after payment
- No real process
It’s not just “they didn’t like the site.”
It’s “they didn’t get a site.”
That’s not a design issue. That’s a business issue.
This Work Is Personal (Whether You Realize It or Not)
When someone hires me, they’re trusting me with something that matters to them.
Their business.
Their reputation.
Their investment.
That’s not something I take lightly.
And I think that’s where small, dedicated designers—people who are actually in this for the long haul—stand apart.
Not because we’re the only ones who can do the work, but because we understand what’s at stake if we don’t.
Why I’m Not Worried
AI can build a website.
Templates can build a website.
But what those things can’t replace is:
- Reliability
- Communication
- Follow-through
- Long-term support
And honestly, after hearing these stories, I’m more confident than ever that those things matter more than anything else.
The tools for AI are out there – but it still takes someone who knows what they’re doing to get the most out of them.
There are a lot of good web designers out there.
But there are also a lot who aren’t ready, aren’t experienced, or aren’t treating it like a real business.
And unfortunately, small business owners are the ones who feel that the most.
If you’re hiring someone to build your website, don’t just look at:
- Price
- Portfolio
- Timeline
Look at:
- How they communicate
- How they explain their process
- Whether they’re asking thoughtful questions
- Whether they feel like someone you can actually rely on
Because at the end of the day, you’re not just hiring someone to design a site.
You’re hiring someone to show up.
